History of Carpet Invention, Such As Before the Days of Empire Carpet
The carpet industry today, including major companies like Empire Carpet, is important for providing comfortable flooring options for both homes and businesses. However, there was once a time when carpet had not yet even been invented. The history of carpet invention goes back a long way, but in the US the modern carpet industry can be traced back to the year 1791. This is the year that William Sprague founded the first carpet mill to produce woven carpet in the city of Philadelphia. A number of other carpet mills opened in cities throughout New England in the early 1800s, including a carpet manufacturing company in Little Falls, New Jersey which operated continuously until 1979.
In the year 1839, the industry was significantly changed by Erastus Bigelow who was the inventor of the power loom. This device made the process of weaving carpets much faster and led to a doubling of carpet production in the first year it was implemented in factories. By 1850, carpet production had tripled.
Of course, carpet invention began at a much earlier point in human history. The term "carpet" comes from an old Italian word "carpita" which means "to pluck." Carpets differ from rugs in that a carpet covers a floor from wall to wall and a rug does not. Carpets were typically not used to cover floors in Europe until the 18th century.
There are many different types of carpets, as demonstrated by the range offered by Empire Carpet, for example. These include woven carpets, which are produced on looms, and needlefelt carpets, which are produced using electrostatic attraction of synthetic fibers to form a durable carpet. These carpets are typically used in high traffic industrial settings. Hand knotted pile carpets are the earliest known type of carpets, dating back to the 3rd millennium BCE in Central Asia. The earliest surviving carpet is known as the Pazyryk Carpet, and it dates from the 4th century BCE.
